Tow Truck License

There are many legal requirements for those who wish to operate a tow truck in this country. The specific regulations vary by state, but in order to be able to legally tow a vehicle when you are not the owner of that vehicle requires security and legal checks. In addition, you must have a commercial driver's license to be able to drive a truck that weighs over 26,000 pounds. Many states also require a special permit for a tow truck, which may mean obtaining a special "V" classification designating you as a licensed vehicle recovery driver. Anyone who applies for a commercial driver's license for the purpose of operating a tow truck must also be at least 21 years of age; however, some states will allow drivers between 18 and 21 to obtain a commercial driver's license for some types of vehicles to be used only in that state.
