Texas Truck License

While there are federal standards for commercial driver's licenses, many states have additional requirements. The Texas truck license standards include a Texas driver's license, a clean driving record, commercial driver training, the appropriate fees and paperwork, a vision test, a physical exam (repeated every two years), the ability to read and write English, written tests (with a grade of 80% or better), and a driving test in your own commercial vehicle. While training is necessary, the only proof of that training is the ability to pass the written and driving tests. Some of the skills needed in order to obtain a Texas truck license are being able to inspect your vehicle, to couple and uncouple trailers, to complete an airbrake safety inspection test, and to pass a road test in your commercial vehicle while following all traffic laws and avoiding an accident.

Fast Facts

  • Drivers can only hold one driver's license at a time, not a regular license and a Texas truck license, or commercial licenses from two separate states.
  • Texas commercial driver training costs between $2,000 and $2,500, which is often paid by an employer, and can take as little as three weeks or as much as a semester.
