A commercial motor vehicle driver must have a commercial driver's license in order to operate a large truck weighing 26,000 pounds or more and carrying 16 or more passengers. But they must also own or have the use of a commercial motor vehicle in which to take their driving test. That vehicle must be licensed in their name or the name of their trucking company in order to be used on public roadways. In addition, that driver must be able to inspect a license truck for safety, operate the air brakes, and identify the vital parts of the vehicle on the written test. Once the commercial driver's license is obtained, the driver will be required to regularly maintain and inspect a license truck and operate it responsibly in order for it to remain on the road.
